Alaska Legal Services Corporation

Alaska Legal Services Corporation (ALSC) welcomed Maggie Humm as Executive Director in April. She had been holding the position on an interim basis for six months prior.

ALSC is a private, nonprofit law firm that provides free civil legal aid to Alaskans who cannot afford it. Its attorneys assist clients to protect health and safety and to promote family stability.

“After an extensive, six-month national search, the board of directors unanimously determined Maggie was the best and most qualified candidate to serve as our new ED,” says ALSC Board Chair, Joe Nelson. “We are excited about the future of ALSC under her leadership and to continue ALSC’s tradition of cultivating leadership development within the organization.”

Humm has worked with ALSC for more than twenty years, as an intern, staff attorney, supervising attorney, and deputy director before serving as interim executive director. In her practice, she has advocated for victims of violence and sexual assault and for underserved families and youth. She has demonstrated herself to be a collaborative leader working alongside Alaska’s tribes and nonprofits in major cases and in negotiations to increase access to justice across the state.

“ALSC has an incredibly dedicated staff that provides critical civil legal services to thousands of Alaskans each year,” Humm says. “I’m honored to be chosen as the next person to lead this wonderful organization and I look forward to working with our staff, board of directors, and community partners to deliver high quality and innovative legal services to communities throughout Alaska. Alaska faces an enormous justice gap with low-income individuals and families facing countless civil legal problems that they are not able to get assistance with; ALSC plays a key role in resolving this issue and I am excited to work with so many talented individuals who are working hard to address this crisis.”

Alaska Native regional, village, and urban corporations operate in every industry all around the state, often in regions that don’t attract attention from other corporations. Our cover story for December 2025 is an excellent example, as it covers the investment Aleut is making in its region, Unangam Tanangin, or the Aleutian Islands, which stretch 1,000 miles into the Bering Sea and Pacific Ocean. The Alaska Native special section also visits Kodiak and the handful of corporations benefiting that region, and looks back over fifty years of ANCSA corporation history and how the corporations have built, maintained, and strengthened communications and relationships with their shareholders.
