The board of the Anchorage Economic Development Corporation (AEDC) found a new President and CEO at the Alaska Small Business Development Center. That organization’s state director, Jon Bittner, steps up to fill the vacancy left when Jenna Wright, who succeeded longtime AEDC leader Bill Popp in 2023, had to take extended leave for health reasons. Heather Harris has been guiding the corporation in the interim.

AEDC says its executive search attracted more than 100 applicants. After multiple rounds of interviews, the board of directors unanimously selected Bittner.

“Throughout the interview process, Jon consistently demonstrated the collaborative leadership approach that is central to AEDC’s success,” says Board Chair Mark Filipenko. “Among a strong pool of candidates, Jon stood out for his economic development experience, vision for Anchorage’s future, and readiness to hit the ground running. He brings both continuity and fresh perspective, and we are confident in his ability to strengthen AEDC as a force for positive change in our community.”

A lifelong Anchorage resident and graduate of the Anchorage School District and UAA, Bittner has held leadership roles advancing business growth and economic opportunity across the state. Having previously served at AEDC, Bittner combines deep institutional knowledge with new energy and perspectives, balancing respect for the organization’s history with a clear vision for its future.

“I am deeply honored to lead an organization that plays such a vital role in Anchorage’s economic future,” says Bittner. “Anchorage is my home, and I look forward to working with our investors, businesses, and community partners to strengthen economic opportunity and build a prosperous, sustainable, and diverse economy for our community.”
