A Two-Year Degree in Half the Time at UAF Community and Technical College
Alaska students have a new option for an Associate of Arts program at UAF.

Associate degrees are practically synonymous with a two-year course of study, but not anymore. The UAF Community and Technical College launched a fully online program that lets students earn an Associate of Arts degree in just one year. The program opens the door to bachelors’ degree-seeking students across the state to complete both an associate and a bachelor’s degree in as little as three years, while also providing a low-cost opportunity for students to pursue new careers more quickly.
Good Choice for Deciding on a Major
The course list is still being finalized, but subjects so far include environmental science, American Sign Language, archaeology, natural history, and world art. The program consists of one two-week session and eight six-week sessions, with courses selected to highlight common themes and ideas. The college says this structure enhances learning through interdisciplinary collaboration.

UAF says the AAY program is ideal for students who are unsure what they want to major in. It allows students to explore a wide range of topics, which can help them discover their greatest area of interest. The AAY program can be customized to meet specific needs, and the degree is also flexible; if academic or career goals change, the student’s academic plan can adapt to meet those changes and achieve their education and career goals.
The program features a maximum out-of-pocket cost of $2,000 per semester for eligible Alaska residents. Credits earned are easily transferable to any bachelor’s degree program at UAF.
Students may start the Associate of Arts in a Year (AAY) program in either January or August, with online classes both at set times and on their own schedules. Classes in the AAY program are scheduled for Tuesday and Thursday evenings and Saturday mornings, accommodating students balancing work and personal commitments.
Students will progress through the program as part of a group, providing an opportunity to build relationships and support networks. Experienced faculty members will teach all courses, using a curriculum designed to be engaging and relevant.
The Community and Technical College offers more than fifty certificate and degree programs designed to meet the evolving needs of learners and the Alaska workforce.
