Travel between Alaska and neighboring Canada will be easier next summer, when Calgary-based WestJet, Canada’s second-largest air carrier, will begin twice-weekly flights between its hub city in Alberta and Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport (ANC).
The seasonal service adds a third international connection at ANC. Currently, the only direct flights between Anchorage and another country are Air Canada’s route to Vancouver, British Columbia, and service to Frankfurt, Germany by Condor Airlines and Discover (known as Eurowings until last year).
Making Global Travel Easier
On June 29, 2025, WestJet will begin flights in and out of ANC’s South Terminal. Calgary International Airport, headquarters for WestJet, provides connections to more than 100 destinations across Canada, the Caribbean, and Europe, including year-round service to Reykjavik, London, and Paris. WestJet also has routes to the Lower 48, but as a foreign carrier WestJet cannot carry Alaska passengers to other US airports, due to cabotage rules.
This new route opens Alaska to Canadian travelers, inviting them to experience Alaska firsthand.
“We are thrilled to welcome WestJet’s new service between Anchorage and Calgary. This route strengthens our connection to Canada, offering travelers more convenience and opportunities to explore everything both Anchorage and Calgary have to offer,” says Angie Spear, interim airport director of ANC. “WestJet’s commitment to this market reflects the growing demand for seamless travel options, and we are proud to support this expansion. We look forward to a successful partnership with WestJet and encourage travelers to take advantage of this exciting new service.”
The Anchorage–Calgary route will operate twice weekly from June 29 through September 7, 2025, with schedules designed to align with peak summer travel demand and provide smooth connections through WestJet’s Calgary hub.
“We are excited to be adding service between the iconic tourism destination of Anchorage and Calgary, our global hub, where guests can further seamlessly connect to our vast network of forty domestic destinations across Canada and nine transcontinental destinations featuring convenient service to both Europe and Asia,” says John Weatherill, WestJet Group’s executive vice president and chief commercial officer. “The parallels that exist between Anchorage and Calgary’s recreational landscapes are undeniable, and we are proud to provide our guests with this convenient link to further fulfill our guests’ travel aspirations this summer as Canada’s leisure champion.”
As with Air Canada’s flights from Vancouver, WestJet will arrive at ANC’s South Terminal. Passengers pre-clear customs at their originating airport, thanks to a cooperative agreement between US and Canadian authorities. The only inbound passengers clearing customs at ANC are the Frankfurt flights that arrive at the North Terminal. All departures will be from the South Terminal.
