TEDxAnchorage is becoming an annual event, with organizers announcing a theme for a second round of lectures less than a year after the first. And they’ve selected a theme.

Organizing Disorder

Presentations on February 18, 2023 will center on the theme of entropy.

“Entropy, which has scientific roots, often deals with measurements of uncertainty, chaos, and disorder,” says Vicente Capala III, executive producer of TEDxAnchorage. “While that might not be the most welcoming theme on the surface, we believe taking that framework and applying it across disciplines, human nature, and more will illuminate aspects of our society and light pathways beyond our collective imagination.”

Organizers are seeking presenters for the February 2023 event, accepting applications through July 25 at tedxanchorage.com.

TEDx is a spinoff of TED, which stands for technology, entertainment, and design. The main lecture series began in 1984 as a conference, held annually since 1990. The brand is licensed worldwide as TEDx for local organizers, provided the events are not for profit, speakers are unpaid, and the materials are not copyrighted.

The first installment of what is becoming the TEDxAnchorage series was held at Loussac Library in March 2022.

“Our first TEDxAnchorage was a great chance for us to see how the market would respond to this type of event,” says organizer and licensee Zach Aregood. “We were excited when tickets for the show sold out in just a few days. Coming off of a successful inaugural event, we’re even more motivated and inspired to create a unique experience rooted in sharing ideas worth spreading.”

The theme for the 2022 TEDxAnchorage was “You Don’t Know What You Don’t Know.” Among the eight presenters were cyclist Lael Wilcox; business leadership coach Woodrie Burich; drag queen Brooks Banker; the chief innovation officer of Launch Alaska, Rob Roys, talking about innovations in renewable energy; and Ben Kellie, founder and CEO of The Launch Company, an aerospace services and hardware provider in Anchorage.

“As Zach and I were considering our theme for the next installment,” Capala says, “we wanted to bring to light those ideas and talks that demand attention—and those that could impact the Anchorage community in lasting ways.”

The theme announcement notes that entropy, a term from the physics of heat transfer, typically signifies chaos and transformation. Entropy can apply in biological and informational systems, and the announcement points to the positive and negative connotations, such as a flame that can destroy but also bring warmth.

Individuals who are interested in speaking at the February 2023 event can apply online at tedxanchorage.com. The application window closes on July 25th.
