Alaska Business Recognized by Trade Publication Awards

A photograph by Kerry Tasker shows the co-founders of Remora at their hangar.

Alaska Business

The design of this magazine earned recognition from Trade Associations Business Publications International (TABPI) at the 2023 Tabbie Awards. In the category of Front Cover, Photograph, the June 2022 issue earned Silver.

Bouncing Off the Page

The cover, designed by Art Director Monica Sterchi-Lowman, features a picture taken by freelance photographer Kerry Tasker. It shows the exuberant faces of Rebecca Clark and Jody Oyen, co-founders of Remora, a logistics app.

Of the photography session, Sterchi-Lowman recalls that Tasker had shot standard business poses, and then Clark and Oyen started having fun. “They were having a ball posing and started goofing off, and Kerry encouraged it,” she says. She considers the cover one of her favorites because the Remora co-founders’ personalities “bounce off the page.”

One of the Tabbie judges commented, “A stunning cover! The photograph is humorous and tells the story beautifully. The typography and placement of the cover line are superb. All around, great work!”

The Gold prize in the category went to the April 2022 issue of Datacenter Dynamics, featuring an intriguing black-and-white image of core rope memory.

Last year, Sterchi-Lowman earned Bronze Tabbies for Front Cover, Digital Imagery and for Opening Page or Spread. A year before that, she won a Gold award for Opening Page or Spread.

Also, the June 2022 cover was recognized earlier this year by the Alaska Press Club, placing 3rd in the Magazine Cover category, which was won by this magazine’s October 2022 issue.

TABPI also recognized Alaska Business with an Honorable Mention in the Focus/Profile Article category. Daniel Kreilkamp, formerly a staff writer, returned as a freelancer to author “Unpacking an Underdog,” a profile of Brian McKinnon’s invention of the PacBak P88-MK Cooler/ROAM 18-V Vacuum Sealer Combo in the December 2022 issue.

The category was won by “Veterans in the Line Trade” from the September 2022 issue of T&D World, a magazine for the electricity transmission and distribution industry.

Jason Martin, vice president and general manager of Alaska Business Publishing Company, says, “We’re incredibly proud of our editorial and production teams that turn out exceptional issues month after month. Thank you.”
