To support the business lending services that Credit Union 1 (CU1) launched earlier in 2025, the co-op is creating a new leadership role, Vice President of Business Services. The first person hired for the job is a leader in the business community, Danicia Shiryayev.

The responsibilities for Shiryayev’s new position include unifying CU1’s business deposit and lending functions while overseeing the Business Lending and Account Services departments.

Shiryayev brings more than sixteen years of experience in Alaska’s financial sector. She studied business administration and management at UAS and serves on the boards of the Alaska Chamber and Junior Achievement of Alaska. In October, she began a term as board chair of the Anchorage Chamber of Commerce.

CU1 President and CEO Mark Burgess says adding Shiryayev to the executive team is a strategic move that positions the credit union to enhance services for business customers. “CU1 is in growth mode, and adding talented, experienced leaders like Danicia ensures we can deliver more and better services to our members,” says Burgess. “Her insight into the Alaska market, her understanding of what small businesses need to thrive here, and her deep commitment to our state will be tremendous assets for CU1 and the communities we serve.”

Alaska Native regional, village, and urban corporations operate in every industry all around the state, often in regions that don’t attract attention from other corporations. Our cover story for December 2025 is an excellent example, as it covers the investment Aleut is making in its region, Unangam Tanangin, or the Aleutian Islands, which stretch 1,000 miles into the Bering Sea and Pacific Ocean. The Alaska Native special section also visits Kodiak and the handful of corporations benefiting that region, and looks back over fifty years of ANCSA corporation history and how the corporations have built, maintained, and strengthened communications and relationships with their shareholders.
