A scientist at Nortech—an environmental, energy, health, and safety services firm with offices in Anchorage, Fairbanks, and Juneau—earned certification as an Alaska Underground Storage Tank Worker. The credential for Environmental Scientist Jacob Ferrill expands Nortech’s capacity to provide compliance services for petroleum storage systems across Alaska.

Ferrill joined Nortech in 2023 at the Juneau office. He supports site assessments, contaminated site investigations, and remedial action projects statewide, bringing technical expertise and field experience to every project.

Ferrill holds a bachelor’s degree in biology from UAS, where he conducted undergraduate research on antifreeze protein pathways. Since joining Nortech, he obtained his 24-Hour Building Inspector certification and earned recognition from the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation as a qualified environmental professional. His project experience includes spill response and regulatory compliance support.

New Oil on the North Slope

In mid-May it was 19°F and windy at the Aurora Hotel in Deadhorse. As I stood in the parking lot surveying the surroundings, I chatted with a gentleman from Texas who works for Nabors Alaska Drilling and was in town as part of a crew tasked with getting a previously inactive drill rig up and running. He said that, according to his supervisor, spring is the windy season on the North Slope. The gusts were bracing, numbing the fingers holding my camera, but most of my attention was focused on what I could capture through the lens: work trucks, shipping containers, buildings obscured by snow whipped up by the wind.
