Cathodic Protection Specialist, or CP4, is the highest certification level awarded by the Association for Materials Protection and Performance (formerly known as NACE), and Eric Jones of Coffman Engineers has earned it.

Jones has more than eleven years of experience in cathodic protection monitoring across pipelines, tank farms, and marine facilities. He has led field crews during annual surveys, monitored test stations, and conducted close interval potential surveys. Jones also contributed to cathodic protection system design and installations, gas leak detection surveys, pipeline locating, soil resistivity testing, meter calibration, equipment tracking, inventory management, and visual atmospheric inspections.

“Eric is the go-to for challenging jobs. His positive attitude, hours of hard work, and extensive travel throughout Alaska during his eleven years at Coffman are greatly appreciated. He’s a valuable team member who people genuinely enjoy working with. This certification is a remarkable achievement and a testament to his dedication and deep experience in the field of cathodic protection,” says Cynthia Cacy, principal and manager of the Anchorage Corrosion Control Engineering team.

Jones stands out for his capability in remote and logistically complex environments. His corrosion control operations have utilized landing craft to access isolated coastal facilities, helicopters for rapid deployment to off-grid sites, and Sherp UTVs to navigate rugged terrain and wetlands. These operations required advanced planning, coordination with logistics teams, and adaptive field strategies for safe and effective data collection and system maintenance. His ability to operate in extreme conditions has played a vital role in maintaining the integrity of infrastructure across Alaska and other remote regions.

Alaska Native regional, village, and urban corporations operate in every industry all around the state, often in regions that don’t attract attention from other corporations. Our cover story for December 2025 is an excellent example, as it covers the investment Aleut is making in its region, Unangam Tanangin, or the Aleutian Islands, which stretch 1,000 miles into the Bering Sea and Pacific Ocean. The Alaska Native special section also visits Kodiak and the handful of corporations benefiting that region, and looks back over fifty years of ANCSA corporation history and how the corporations have built, maintained, and strengthened communications and relationships with their shareholders.
