Alaska Literacy Program Expands Adult Educational Services

Aug 25, 2021 | Education, News, Nonprofits

As the newly designated Anchorage Regional Provider of Adult Education, Alaska Literacy Program (ALP) is significantly expanding their services to provide education to adults striving for their GED and preparing to enter or advance in Alaska’s workforce.

This designation through a competitive State of Alaska grant process will allow for the following:

  • Launch of the Anchorage General Education Development (GED) Preparation Center at ALP. The Alaska GED® is a high school diploma alternative for adults who did not graduate from a standard high school experience.
  • Expanded services to all Anchorage adults with educational needs. ALP will now provide more robust support for reading, math, GED prep, and job skills preparation, in addition to their long history of providing English language learning.
  • Additional ALP staff and office space expansion in order to effectively meet the educational needs of Anchorage adults.

“We are so excited to expand our services and grateful for the trust the community is instilling in us to provide a warm and understanding environment that allows all adults to advance in their education and pursue their dreams,” says Lori Pickett, Executive Director at Alaska Literacy
Program.

“The expansion of services at Alaska Literacy Program means that we can contribute to a healthier community where citizens can see opportunities to better their lives. These services will positively impact public health and intergenerational wellness in Anchorage.”

In addition to the expanded educational services, ALP’s Peer Leader Navigator program is continuing to support the community during the COVID-19 pandemic with evidence-based COVID-19 health information and community education to increase access to testing, vaccines, and relief programs for families needing housing, food, and education.

Alaska Literacy Program is a nonprofit organization based in Anchorage whose mission is to change lives through literacy.
