Six port and maritime infrastructure projects across Alaska split nearly $105 million in federal funds from the US Department of Transportation’s Port Infrastructure Development Program.

Infrastructure Investment

The investments will support the modernization and expansion of ports, harbors, docks, and related infrastructure statewide.

Almost half of the funding goes to the DeLong Dock Replacement Project in Whittier, where $50,593,488 will support the replacement of aging maritime infrastructure.

Kodiak gets $26,070,000 for the Saint Herman Harbor Recapitalization Project, Phase 2A, to support improvements for the commercial fishing fleet and maritime economy.

The expansion of Nome’s Arctic deep-draft port gets $11,250,000 to support local service infrastructure.

The Port of Alaska Modernization Program in Anchorage gets $6,394,000 for the Stevedore Support Facilities and Landside Operations Readiness Project.

In Kake, $6,287,220 goes toward the Kake Marine Cargo Dock Development Project.

And $4,402,403 for the Ounalashka Arctic and North Pacific Maritime Hub in Unalaska will advance maritime infrastructure supporting commercial fisheries, shipping, and maritime operations there.

The Port Infrastructure Development Program was authorized by Congress in 2010 under the National Defense Authorization Act but not funded until 2019. It was then expanded in 2021 via the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act.

“The Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act continues to deliver for Alaska,” says Senator Lisa Murkowski. “These projects will improve safety and efficiency while helping ensure Alaska can continue to serve as a gateway for commerce, transportation, and our national security.”
