Medline Opens New Anchorage Distribution Center

Aug 27, 2020 | Healthcare, Manufacturing, Monitor

Medline, a healthcare business and the largest privately-owned medical products manufacturer and distributor in North America, announced its new Anchorage distribution facility has opened for business and is fully operational. The cutting-edge facility will add another thirty-five new jobs to its existing twenty team members to support Medline’s growing customer base in Alaska. Medline previously operated an Anchorage distribution center one third of the size of its new facility.

“Medline has been growing to meet the needs of healthcare providers in Alaska, and we are excited to move into our new home,” said Bill Abington, Medline Executive Vice President for Global Operations. “The added team members and new facility ensures we will continue to be on the leading edge of healthcare to support our customers.”

The $43 million medical-grade distribution center is a 145,000 square-foot facility from which tens of thousands of individual products and devices will be shipped to healthcare providers such as hospitals, nursing homes, ambulatory surgery centers, hospices, and physician offices.

“We invested in the industry’s most advanced technology to manage the complex needs of our customers. Healthcare professionals are facing new challenges working on the frontlines and they are counting on Medline to support them each day,” Abington continued.

Medline’s new distribution center utilizes the latest technology, including an advanced robotic picking system, hands-free voice picking systems, and a wireless communications system.

The building’s energy efficient design and LEED-certified building minimizes environmental impacts. Medline also supports Anchorage businesses and expects to spend approximately $300,000 annually with local vendors.

Medline has played a critical role responding to the current COVID-19 pandemic. Distribution centers like the newly built facility in Anchorage have operated around the clock to get PPE and other medical supplies to healthcare providers. In 2020, Medline has delivered to healthcare providers more than 9 billion exam gloves, nearly 400 million facemasks, cover gowns, and isolation gowns and more than double typical hand sanitizer volumes.

New Oil on the North Slope
August 2026
In mid-May it was 19°F and windy at the Aurora Hotel in Deadhorse. As I stood in the parking lot surveying the surroundings, I chatted with a gentleman from Texas who works for Nabors Alaska Drilling and was in town as part of a crew tasked with getting a previously inactive drill rig up and running. He said that, according to his supervisor, spring is the windy season on the North Slope. The gusts were bracing, numbing the fingers holding my camera, but most of my attention was focused on what I could capture through the lens: work trucks, shipping containers, buildings obscured by snow whipped up by the wind.
