The newest building for Alaska’s oldest merchant brings new retail options to Kotzebue. Alaska Commercial Company (AC) held a grand opening November 16 for the 26,000-square-foot store.

Deli, Bakery, and Motorsports

The new store is larger than the existing store and offers a modern, energy-efficient design that prioritizes convenience, quality, and accessibility. It features the first self-checkout stations in Kotzebue.

Built over the last two years, the store includes Deli and Bakery departments offering fresh grab-and-go options, a full-service hot case, a variety of meats and cheeses, and freshly baked bread. The Produce Department will showcase an enhanced selection including more organic options, more made-in-store food, and a floral department offering bouquets and arrangements. The space for chilled and frozen foods has also doubled.

“AC is proud to have significantly expanded our fresh and frozen food assortment in Kotzebue. We are equally proud that all food and general merchandise are now located on a single level, which will create a convenient shopping experience for all ages,” says AC General Manager and Vice President of Operations Walt Pickett.

A motorsports department includes all-terrain vehicles and essential fluids to meet the needs of rural Alaskans who depend on this equipment for daily transportation, subsistence living, and outdoor exploration.

“AC is proud to have invested in a new store for Kotzebue and the entire Northwest Arctic Borough. We collaborated with many Kotzebue residents on this store, and their efforts will ensure that groceries and general merchandise are available in the region for decades to come,” says AC President Kyle Hill.

The store also hosts a Credit Union 1 branch.

A subsidiary of Winnipeg-based The North West Company, AC has thirty-seven locations around Alaska.
