To expand in-state access to psychiatric treatment for teenagers, Providence Alaska is opening the Providence Youth Behavioral Health Center in Anchorage this fall.

“The Providence Youth Behavioral Health Center provides an important level of care for Alaska youth and their families,” says Carla MacGregor, senior director of behavioral health for Providence Alaska.

Adolescent Support

The center is designed as a Level 5 residential psychiatric treatment center for adolescents ages 12–17 who require 24-hour psychiatric care. The sixteen-bed facility will support at-risk youth who need intensive, structured treatment in a residential setting. Typical stays would range from thirty to sixty days, depending on individual needs.

In the five-tier mental health continuum, Level 5 refers to acute, high-intensity treatment for patients who might be a danger to themselves or others, in contrast to Level 4 long-term residential care. Such facilities are typically secured, with round-the-clock monitoring.

MacGregor says, “This center reflects our commitment to ensuring young people have access to the specialized psychiatric care they need close to home. By coordinating with our broader behavioral health services, it strengthens the continuum of care and helps connect adolescents to the right support at the right time.”

Teens in the center will participate in a structured daily schedule with active staff engagement and clinician-led group therapies that support emotional regulation and community reintegration. Providence says the goal is to help adolescents stay safe and maintain stability, develop healthy coping and self-regulation skills, and successfully transition back into home, school, and community settings.

Similar services are available locally from North Star Behavioral Health and AK Child & Family.

The new center, located on the main Providence Alaska Medical Center campus, includes an intensive family education program focused on communication, problem-solving, and conflict resolution to strengthen family functioning.

Providence cites the Alaska Department of Health as a partner in setting up the center.
