Cross-Country Champ Earns Professional Engineer License

Coffman Engineers

Adding to his laurels as a past winner of the Mount Marathon and Crow Pass Crossing footraces, Scott Patterson at Coffman Engineers achieved his Alaska Professional Engineering (PE) license in mechanical engineering.

Patterson joined Coffman in 2012 as an intern while ski racing in college. “He has put in a lot of effort over the years to develop as an engineer while also being a professional skier,” says Coffman’s mechanical-industrial principal Trevor Buron. “I’m very excited for Scott to obtain his professional license. Scott’s abilities as an engineer are just as impressive as they are on the snow and I’m proud to work with him.”

At Coffman, Patterson has worked on all types of energy-related facilities, including advanced analytics for pipeline integrity testing and in-line inspection as well as transient flow modeling. Patterson also has experience analyzing hydrogen production systems and cryogenic hydrogen systems. He was integral to the development of Coffman’s corrosion growth rate analysis tools. Patterson also has experience in custom machine tool design, including engineering analysis, design, and destructive bench testing.

He adds PE to his career accolades, including winning the Crow Pass Crossing seven times and the Mount Marathon race in 2017. On skis, he’s been to the Olympic Games twice. At the 2018 games, he placed 11th in the 50km Classic. In 2022, he finished 8th place in the 50km Skate event, marking the US men’s best cross-country finish in nearly fifty years. Patterson also posted impressive results by taking 11th place in the Skiathlon, another men’s best for the United States. He also has four US National championship titles and was a top-ten finisher at World Cup and World Championship races in 2018.
