The Alaska Native corporation for the Interior region is getting a new President and CEO for the first time in more than a decade. Dan Winkelman is stepping down as president and CEO of Yukon-Kuskokwim Health Corporation to take over for Aaron Schutt, who has led Doyon, Limited since 2011.

The appointment takes effect June 1. Winkelman will be based at Doyon headquarters in Fairbanks, responsible for working with the board of directors to set the overall direction of the Doyon family of companies, providing leadership to the senior management team, and supporting more than 2,300 employees in Alaska and nationwide.

Winkelman is Deg Hit’an Athabascan from Anchorage, with family originally from Shageluk and McGrath. He is an enrolled member of the Shageluk Native Tribe and a Doyon shareholder.

“As a shareholder, I look forward to this next step for the Doyon family of companies,” says Winkelman. “Doyon is rooted in safety, performance, and culture. Doyon has a strong history and a strong future.”

Winkelman holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Oregon and earned a JD from the University of New Mexico. He joined Yukon-Kuskokwim Health Corporation in 2001 and served as general counsel before becoming CEO in 2014. Winkelman is credited with long-term infrastructure projects under his stint in leadership, including the construction of new facilities and clinics across the region.

He is scheduled to leave the healthcare network April 10 as he transitions to Doyon. Yukon-Kuskokwim Health Corporation will employ an executive search firm to find a new president and CEO.

Schutt remains with Doyon during the leadership transition. Board Chair Chris Simon states, “On behalf of the Board, we thank Aaron for two decades of dedication, during his tenure Doyon saw record growth and investment in our business and communities. His dedication to our employees and shareholders is a great example of service and strength.”
