Greater Wasilla Chamber of Commerce members turned out in June to break ground on a new hotel in Wasilla. The Home2 Suites by Hilton will be located on East Tysons Trail in the Shoppes at Sun Mountain complex, near Planet Fitness. Contractor H5 Construction estimates the project should be complete by the late summer 2026.

Building a Tourism Hub

Although the Matanuska-Susitna Borough is home to more than 100,000 people, hardly any national hotel chains have a presence. There’s the recently remodeled Best Western Lake Lucille Inn, and… well, that’s it. Not that the area is hurting for places to rent a room for the night: on the Parks Highway strip before it descends into Wasilla proper, there’s the Grand View Inn & Suites, Windbreak Hotel, and Alaskan View Motel. Other options, including Mat-Su Resort and Alaska’s Select Inn Hotel, dot the area around Wasilla, along with a lot of bed and breakfast or vacation rentals. But a national chain is a rarity.

“Bringing Hilton to Wasilla signals to visitors and businesses alike that our city is ready to welcome and serve the world. We’re proud to support the partners who made this possible and are excited for what this means for the Valley,” said Greater Wasilla Chamber of Commerce CEO Jessica Viera. “Today’s groundbreaking is more than just the start of construction—it’s the next step in shaping Wasilla’s future as a hub for commerce, tourism, and community.”

Hilton positions its Home2 Suites line as extended-stay hotels with lots of amenities: kitchenettes in each suite, a conference room, an exercise room, an in-hotel market, and something new for Wasilla accommodations: a pool and jacuzzi. As a bonus, many Home2 Suites locations are pet-friendly.

“Bringing a major brand hotel to the Mat-Su Valley has been a dream of mine since 2015, and breaking ground on Home2 Suites by Hilton is a huge milestone for our community,” says Cameron Johnson, co-owner of H5 Construction, the company behind the Hilton project.

The hotel will have 107 suites, says H5 Project Manager Cole Danielson. The building is about 70,000 square feet. In early July, underground plumbing was being laid in preparation for the structure.

Danielson estimated more than 100 people, including H5 Construction employees and subcontractors, will be working on the project over the next several months.
