Alaska Communications has a new top executive, for the third time in as many years. The Anchorage-based telecom hired Courtland Madock as CEO and president, taking over for Paul Fenaroli, who took the job in late 2024. Fenaroli was hired after Matthew McConnell completed a one-year tenure as CEO.

The Alaska Communications board of directors chose Madock for her experience in broadband and telecommunications, including senior leadership roles at multistate internet provider WOW!, fiber network Brightspeed, and U.S. Cellular, now part of T-Mobile. She has led large teams, launched new products and brands, and enhanced the end-to-end customer experience while driving growth.

“Courtland is a proven leader who builds customer-focused organizations and delivers results,” says board chair Naji Khoury. “She brings the experience, leadership, and customer-first mindset needed to help move the company forward, and we are optimistic about her ability to drive growth for the business.”

Madock has been with Colorado-based WOW! since January as chief commercial officer, working from Chicago, where she spent most of her career with U.S. Cellular. She holds a bachelor’s degree in economics from the University of Iowa and an MBA from Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management.

“I’m honored to join Alaska Communications and build on the strong foundation in place,” says Madock. “This is a company with a clear mission, strong community ties, and a dedicated team. I look forward to listening, learning, and working together to continue delivering reliable connectivity for Alaskans.”

Fenaroli will remain with the company through September 1 to support the transition. The former Anchorage telephone utility, now an affiliate of Massachusetts-based ATN International, says Fenaroli is stepping down in August to focus on his family.

“On behalf of the board, I want to thank Paul for his leadership and the significant contributions he made strengthening connectivity across Alaska during his tenure,” says Koury. “We extend our best wishes to him and his family during this difficult time.”
