The Department of Defense selected Anchorage to host the Ted Stevens Center for Arctic Security Studies, named for the late US senator, to focus on national security and scientific research in the polar region.
The Alaska Army National Guard (AKNG) Divestiture Program handed over its 37th site, a Federal Scout Readiness Center built during the Cold War, to Gambell’s Sivuqaq Incorporated in May.
The renaming was part of ongoing efforts to develop the Space Force, the United States’ sixth military branch, while identifying those Air Force installations that currently execute Space operations with Space Force Guardian personnel.
The aviation support facility reduces the response time to the Gulf of Alaska during peak fishing season.
The department plans to add four additional KC-135s and up to 220 additional active duty personnel making it a total force unit and increasing the squadron’s total KC-135 aircraft to twelve.
