Providing innovative information and communication technology (ICT) solutions with unmatched service to Alaskan communities, schools, and businesses

For more than two decades, SES Space & Defense has been at the forefront of operating and sustaining reliable fiber optic, microwave, and satellite networks in challenging and remote terrains of Alaska. Serving as a trusted communications and technology partner, SES Space & Defense has played a vital role in supporting remote healthcare clinics, rural Alaskan school districts, as well as state and local governments.

SES Space & Defense’s expertise lies in seamlessly integrating fiber-optic, microwave, and multi-orbit satellite services to empower the state of Alaska through connectivity. The company’s commitment extends to providing advanced multi-orbit satellite communications in Low Earth Orbit (LEO), Medium Earth Orbit (MEO), and Geostationary Earth Orbit (GEO) to over 100 sites across Alaska and an expansive microwave network spanning over 600 miles across interior Alaska from Fairbanks to Allakaket. “We have served over 125 remote Alaska installations, from the Arctic Circle to the Southeast to the Aleutian Chain,” says Vickie Kelly, Senior Business Development Manager, Alaska. “We span the whole state.”

SES Space & Defense is a leading technology innovator and integrated services provider to the U.S. Government, the U.S. Department of Defense, and International Defence partners. The Reston, Virginia based contractor supports secure end-to-end global communications across every mission, landscape, and orbit. “We bring that experience, depth of knowledge, and support into what we do here in Alaska,” Kelly says.

Prioritizing Availability and Response

In Alaska, SES Space & Defense distinguishes itself by the high availability of its broadband services and rapid response.

“Our group is passionate about the support they provide,” says Kelly. The ability to react quickly is due to the size and resources of SES Space & Defense’s support group. The Alaska business unit of SES Space & Defense maintains staff in Alaska and Montana, who provide direct support to operations in Alaska. In addition, there are personnel in Reston, Virginia, and Tampa, Florida, who make up reach-back support.

Our group, for example, donated bandwidth to support rural schools during the coronavirus pandemic and helped the Tanana Chiefs Conference establish a wireless network for a COVID testing center. “Whenever there is a need, we try to respond very rapidly,” she says.

Key to Success
SES Space & Defense’s accomplishments in Alaska are guided by its intentional approach to expanding.

It’s about not trying to be all things to everyone but looking at where the company can provide the best quality service and growth. Expanding its microwave network with two new towers in Indian Mountain and Allakaket is a prime example.

Other important success factors entail staying current with technological advancements and SES Space & Defense’s vendor-agnostic approach, enabling the organization to offer reliable, integrated, end-to-end solutions. As a value-added and authorized reseller of One Web Technology (OWT) and Starshield, SES Space & Defense can deliver secure, high-speed, low-latency LEO broadband services throughout the state. Currently, OWT is in collaboration with SES Space & Defense providing primary and backup capacity to SES Space & Defense’s expansive Arctic terrestrial network supporting schools and healthcare facilities statewide.

Empowering Alaska for over two decades, SES Space & Defense has pioneered robust broadband across Alaska’s rural landscape, and as a stalwart partner, one of the key components of the company’s performance is its long-time staff and their constant dedication. The Alaska support team encompasses program analysts, a program manager, and a senior network engineer with an impressive 29, 18, and 16 years, as well as three 24x7x365 support centers. “We have multiple points of contact to ensure customers can reach our team any time they need assistance and support,” Kelly says.
