The Southwest Alaska Municipal Conference’s Annual Economic Summit and Membership Meeting provides an opportunity for leaders from Southwest to gather, learn, and share what they know. This year’s conference entitled “Currents of Change, Waves of Opportunity” is split into three days, focusing on hazard mitigation and emergency response. Wednesday: community and tribal leaders discuss hazard mitigation, resilience tools, and emergency response resources. Thursday: the conference focuses on economic transitions, from helping Southwest community leaders understand how revised national security strategies may impact communities to encouraging ways to develop and engage in Arctic policymaking. Friday: the conference focuses on fishing and public policy, kicking off with a presentation from the Alaska Seafood Marketing Institute on the state of Alaska fisheries and the seafood industry and wrapping up with presentations from elected officials.
