Tlingit & Haida Hire Shanley as Child Care Administrator
Central Council of Tlingit and Haida Indian Tribes of Alaska announced the hiring of Jamie Shanley as Child Care Administrator for the Tribe’s new Little Eagles and Ravens Nest (LEARN) Child Care Center.
As child care administrator, Shanley will oversee the development and management of the LEARN Child Care Center, which is expected to open this fall at 8001 Glacier Highway in Juneau. With more than 4,000 square feet of space, the year-round child care center will have a total potential enrollment capacity of sixty-four children.
“Child care is predominantly the number one need for working parents in Juneau,” said President Richard Chalyee Éesh Peterson. “We are excited to be opening a child care center and to be a part of the solution, not only for our tribal citizens, but for the community as a whole. Jamie is perfectly suited for this position with her education and passion and we are very fortunate to have her join our management team.”
LEARN will provide an early learning environment with culturally responsive and developmentally appropriate curriculum that encourages open-ended play and exploration, fosters imagination and critical thinking, and helps children develop healthy social and emotional maturity. The curriculum will be child-centered and place-based. Through the State of Alaska’s Child and Adult Care Food program, LEARN will also provide two meals and one snack every day through Tlingit & Haida’s social enterprise, Smokehouse Catering.

Shanley earned a bachelor’s degree in early childhood/elementary education with a double minor in dance and history from Western Oregon University and a master’s degree in early childhood development from Pacific Oaks College in California. She previously worked for Tlingit & Haida as a lead teacher for Salmon Creek Head Start.
Shanley is Aleut and was born and raised in Kodiak. Her maternal family is from Chignik Bay and paternal family is from upstate New York. She has been living in Juneau for the past nine years with her husband Patrick and daughter Noelle.
