Providence Alaska Medical Center Named Best Hospital in Alaska

Nov 30, 2021 | Healthcare, News

Providence Alaska Medical Center

An annual ranking by US News & World Report recognizes Providence Alaska Medical Center (PAMC) as the Best Hospital in Alaska for 2021-22.

#48 Nationwide in Urology

For the 2021-22 rankings and ratings, US News evaluated more than 4,750 medical centers nationwide in fifteen specialties and seventeen procedures and conditions. In the fifteen specialty areas, 175 hospitals were ranked in at least one specialty. PAMC is ranked in exactly one, urology, coming in 48 out of 4,523 hospitals.

The Best Hospitals rankings and ratings, now in their 32nd year, are designed to assist patients and their doctors in making informed decisions about where to receive care for challenging health conditions or for common elective procedures.

The methodologies in most areas of care are based largely on objective measures such as risk-adjusted survival and discharge-to-home rates, volume, and quality of nursing, among other care-related indicators.

“Our caregivers are dedicated to providing Alaskans with the best care possible, even with the challenges we continue to face during the COVID-19 pandemic,” says Ella Goss, chief executive officer of PAMC and chief administrative officer of Providence Alaska Critical Access Hospitals. “This recognition highlights our commitment to quality and safety to the people who trust us with their care.”

In addition to being nationally ranked in urology, PAMC was rated as “high performing” in the treatment of ten adult specialties or conditions:

  • COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease);
  • Heart Attack;
  • Heart Failure;
  • Kidney Failure;
  • Pneumonia;
  • Stroke;
  • Gastroenterology & GI Surgery;
  • Geriatrics;
  • Orthopedics; and
  • Pulmonology and Lung Surgery.

PAMC being recognized in the treatment of eleven adult specialties or conditions is seven more than the rest of Alaska’s hospitals combined.

“This year’s expanded report from US News includes new ratings for important procedures and conditions to help each patient pick the right hospital for the type of care they need,” says Ben Harder, managing editor and chief of health analysis at US News. “Hospitals faced incredible challenges this past year, and the best of them have provided great care throughout the pandemic and continue to offer excellent care today.”

Best Hospitals was produced by US News with RTI International, a leading research organization based in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina.
