Right Moves with Douglas King

Juneau’s urban Native corporation hired a new General Manager for its Tram up Mount Roberts. Douglas King comes aboard with more than thirty years of experience in tourism and hospitality, most recently returning from Grenada where he served as general manager for a five-star plantation resort. King has a bachelor’s degree in business and international tourism, which has taken him to lodges, resorts, hotels, and outdoor adventure companies in Africa, the South Pacific, Asia, the Caribbean, and the Middle East.

“We’re thrilled to have Douglas join the team,” said Steven Sahlender, Vice President of the Alaska Group. “Douglas was able to come up for the last week of the season to get a sense of the operation and he hit the ground running. The team is excited to have some fresh leadership and a new perspective.”

The last ride of the season on the Goldbelt Tram, from sea level to the Timberline on Mount Roberts restaurant, is October 20.

Regarding his new position with the Tram, King says, “I feel both privileged and excited to be both a part of the Goldbelt family as well as the Tram Team and look forward to meeting and supporting all of our guests in the upcoming season and beyond.”

Remoras are small fish that cling to larger animals for a free ride. Their name comes from a Latin word meaning “to hinder or delay,” but the Alaskans who’ve taken the fish as their mascot are doing exactly the opposite. They’ve started a company to streamline cargo shipments.
