AAPI Caregiving in a Pandemic: Accessing Services and Supports

December 7, 2020 @ 11:00 am - 1:00 pm

Free

Are you a caregiver? Do you provide care to a relative, partner, friend, or neighbor from the Asian American and Pacific Islander community who has a chronic disease, disability, health condition, or is an elder (55 years of age or older)?

The help you are providing could be for many types of tasks such as:

  • Personal care (bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting)
  • Household chores and errands (light housekeeping, shopping, meal preparation, laundry)
  • Banking and finances (checking accounts, paying bills)
  • Healthcare needs (giving or monitoring medications, making medical decisions, cleaning wounds, giving injections)
  • Staying with them so they are not alone
  • Arranging for or going to doctor or other appointments
  • Arranging for or checking on services or hired helpers
  • Getting information about medications, care, services, symptoms, or treatments
  • Coordinating help from family members, friends, professionals, and/or hired helpers
  • Providing emotional support

This event will feature speakers, such as service providers and healthcare professionals, and will cover how to prioritize health during the pandemic, including:

  • Mental health resources
  • What is telehealth and access to in-language telehealth services,
  • Best practices for talking about COVID-19 safety with your community

The event is part of a 2-part series to connect diverse family caregivers to local resources and give them an opportunity to share their stories with policymakers, providers, and advocates.

It is co-hosted by Southeast Asia Resource Action Center (SEARAC) and National Asian Pacific Center on Aging (NAPCA), in collaboration with Diverse Elders Coalition (DEC) and National Alliance for Caregiving (NAC). It is funded by the John A Hartford Foundation.
