SUMMARY:Webinar Series: How Artificial Intelligence Is Reshaping the World
DESCRIPTION:Photo 108350369 © Shao-chun Wang – Dreamstime.com \n \n \n \n \n \n UAA’s College of Business and Public Policy announces “Driving into the Future\,” the final installment of its special webinar series on Artificial Intelligence (AI). The Thursday\, April 22 lunchtime event is open to the public and will focus on the development of autonomous vehicles. \nParticipants will learn about 2004’s pivotal breakthrough for autonomous cars\, when the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency created the DARPA Grand Challenge under the direction of our guest speaker Dr. Tony Tether. The autonomous vehicle competition turbocharged development\, using advances in AI\, mobile computing\, sensors\, computer vision\, and LIDAR. In his presentation “What was behind the creation of SIRI and Autonomous Cars?”\, Dr. Tether will describe the DARPA Grand Challenge. He will also discuss the technology behind SIRI\, which led to Alexa and Google Assistant. That critical functionality showed that a computer could gather online information\, allowing autonomous vehicles to predict the road and traffic ahead. \nBy 2019\, many car and technology companies had implemented autonomous car programs\, and Google’s Waymo launched the world’s first commercial self-driving car service. Guest speaker Nick Armstrong Crews\, Senior Software Engineer at Waymo and UAA alum\, will present a current look at autonomous vehicles in “Self-driving cars are here… and they’re awesome!” He will provide many examples “why these are perhaps humanity’s most capable and complex embodied artificial minds to date\, and how these clever\, plucky little robots can save lives and transform cities.”

Themed “An Emerging Field for Petroleum Geologists\,” the online conference will highlight current CCUS work and address related challenges\, including: \n\nSubsurface Geologic Storage\nStorage Associated with CO2 EOR\nReservoir Monitoring and Risk Assessment\nCase Studies\nIndustry Applications\nEconomics\, Incentives\, and Policy\n\nSpeakers will represent research institutions\, universities\, and industry. The work presented at the conference will demonstrate the ongoing need for skilled petroleum geologists and engineers to help define the future of carbon management. \nThe maturing carbon market is a major driver for deployment of carbon capture\, utilization\, and storage (CCUS) projects. Both the subsurface technical knowledge and related data sets of the petroleum industry are major inputs required for the world to successfully move towards a carbon-neutral and sustainable energy future. CCUS has experienced growing interest over the past two decades\, due to the desire to reduce CO2 emissions and to make industrial sources more environmentally sustainable. \nMore recently\, policy instruments such as the expanded Section 45Q federal tax credits—up to $35 per tonne for EOR and $50 for geologic storage—and carbon credit mechanisms such as California’s Low Carbon Fuel Standard (LCFS) are providing opportunities that offset deployment costs and can result in CCUS being a potentially profitable enterprise. \n

SUMMARY:Commercial Fisheries & Local Economies
DESCRIPTION:©Mykyta Starychenko | Dreamstime.com \n \n \n \n \n \n Dr. Brett Watson presents a recent paper on how commercial fishing benefits local economies. \nFishing is big business in Alaska. \nOur fisheries produced approximately $4.4 billion in sales in 2015\, ranking first in the U.S. in terms of production. Communities across the state are involved in fish harvesting\, but this research is the first to statistically quantify how much locals in those communities are benefiting economically. \nThe study is co-authored by Matthew Reimer\, Mouhcine Guettabi and Alan Haynie.

SUMMARY:Women Communicating Arctic Science | Gender in Transdisciplinary Research
DESCRIPTION:Photo 143154979 © He Tian | Dreamstime.com \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n In 2021\, a coalition of organizations including The Arctic Institute\, Women in Polar Sciences\, and Women of the Arctic are organizing a webinar series\, Breaking the Ice Ceiling\, to illuminate polar research by those who identify as women and to foster discussion on systemic change in polar sciences (Indigenous\, natural\, and social sciences) to advance diversity\, equity\, and inclusion. In this webinar\, you will hear from Dr. Alexandra Middleton about Arctic science communicated by women\, the heart and sense dilemma\, and Dr. Amy Lauren Lovecraft about whether gender matters in transdisiplinary Arctic research. \nDr. Middleton is a researcher\, with PhD in Economics and Business Administration from the University of Oulu. Her research focuses on sustainable business development in the Arctic and the socio-economic changes in the Arctic. She has published research on sustainable business development\, demographics\, human capital\, innovations\, employment and connectivity solutions in the Arctic. In her presentation\, “Arctic science communicated by women: heart and sense dilemma\,” she will explore how Arctic women researchers are avid communicators of their research through different typically non-academic outlets\, e.g. media\, social media\, podcasts\, non-academic presentations\, engagements with stakeholders. This is what many women see as their contribution to society where the greatest impact can be achieved. However\, this type of scientific communication is not recognized in university quality assessment schemes and cannot lead to career progression. Hence\, the dilemma arises whether to follow your heart and communicate research through the most natural channels that bring engagement and impact or follow the voice of sense and abide by rigid rules of research excellence evaluation that predominantly values peer-reviewed academic publications. The questions that she is going to address are the following: How to make time spent on communicating research count in researcher evaluations? How to make a balance between heart and sense? Views shared during the seminar can be used as an input to recommendations to policymakers to recognize science communication and science diplomacy efforts as part of research efforts. \nDr. Lovecraft is a Full Professor at the University of Alaska Fairbanks and the Director of the Center for Arctic Policy Studies at the International Arctic Research Center. She has dealt with being a woman in male dominated professions (Political Science and all the geophysical and natural sciences) in the Arctic\, and has learned a lot about navigation for her own career but to also help others coming up. In\, “Doing Transdisciplinary Arctic Research: Does Gender Matter?\,” she will trace my career from trying to do novel work in Grad School to getting a job and then developing as a researcher. Uing myself as an example for what she has seen at different key junctures in women’s careers\, Dr. Lovecraft will present takeaways about how navigating this process from learner to to expert as a woman is different from that of men.
