SUMMARY:Women Communicating Arctic Science | Gender in Transdisciplinary Research
DESCRIPTION:Photo 143154979 © He Tian | Dreamstime.com \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n In 2021\, a coalition of organizations including The Arctic Institute\, Women in Polar Sciences\, and Women of the Arctic are organizing a webinar series\, Breaking the Ice Ceiling\, to illuminate polar research by those who identify as women and to foster discussion on systemic change in polar sciences (Indigenous\, natural\, and social sciences) to advance diversity\, equity\, and inclusion. In this webinar\, you will hear from Dr. Alexandra Middleton about Arctic science communicated by women\, the heart and sense dilemma\, and Dr. Amy Lauren Lovecraft about whether gender matters in transdisiplinary Arctic research. \nDr. Middleton is a researcher\, with PhD in Economics and Business Administration from the University of Oulu. Her research focuses on sustainable business development in the Arctic and the socio-economic changes in the Arctic. She has published research on sustainable business development\, demographics\, human capital\, innovations\, employment and connectivity solutions in the Arctic. In her presentation\, “Arctic science communicated by women: heart and sense dilemma\,” she will explore how Arctic women researchers are avid communicators of their research through different typically non-academic outlets\, e.g. media\, social media\, podcasts\, non-academic presentations\, engagements with stakeholders. This is what many women see as their contribution to society where the greatest impact can be achieved. However\, this type of scientific communication is not recognized in university quality assessment schemes and cannot lead to career progression. Hence\, the dilemma arises whether to follow your heart and communicate research through the most natural channels that bring engagement and impact or follow the voice of sense and abide by rigid rules of research excellence evaluation that predominantly values peer-reviewed academic publications. The questions that she is going to address are the following: How to make time spent on communicating research count in researcher evaluations? How to make a balance between heart and sense? Views shared during the seminar can be used as an input to recommendations to policymakers to recognize science communication and science diplomacy efforts as part of research efforts. \nDr. Lovecraft is a Full Professor at the University of Alaska Fairbanks and the Director of the Center for Arctic Policy Studies at the International Arctic Research Center. She has dealt with being a woman in male dominated professions (Political Science and all the geophysical and natural sciences) in the Arctic\, and has learned a lot about navigation for her own career but to also help others coming up. In\, “Doing Transdisciplinary Arctic Research: Does Gender Matter?\,” she will trace my career from trying to do novel work in Grad School to getting a job and then developing as a researcher. Uing myself as an example for what she has seen at different key junctures in women’s careers\, Dr. Lovecraft will present takeaways about how navigating this process from learner to to expert as a woman is different from that of men.

SUMMARY:Climate Conversations: Solar Geoengineering
DESCRIPTION:Photo 183355250 © Visoot Uthairam | Dreamstime.com \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Solar geoengineering refers to a set of possible strategies to help reduce global warming by increasing the amount of solar radiation reflected away from Earth. Frank Sesno (George Washington University) will moderate a conversation with Marcia McNutt (National Academy of Sciences) and Chris Field (Stanford University) about how and whether solar geoengineering could fit into broader efforts to address climate change\, the role of research in helping inform decisions about implementation\, and the complex global ethics and governance issues associated with solar geoengineering. The webinar will include discussion of the new National Academies report\, Reflecting Sunlight: Recommendations for Solar Geoengineering Research and Research Governance\, which was chaired by Dr. Field. \nThe conversation will be webcast on the event webpage on Thursday\, May 20\, 2021 from 3-4 pm ET. Closed captioning will be provided. \nClimate Conversations: Pathways to Action is a new monthly webinar series from the National Academies of Sciences\, Engineering\, and Medicine that aims to convene high-level\, cross-cutting\, nonpartisan conversations about issues relevant to national policy action on climate change. \nParticipant Bios \nMarcia McNutt is a geophysicist and the President of the National Academy of Sciences. From 2013 to 2016\, she was editor-in-chief of the Science family of journals\, and from 2009 to 2013\, she was director of the U.S. Geological Survey. She also chaired the 2015 National Academies report\, Climate Intervention: Reflecting Sunlight to Cool Earth. \nChris Field is the Perry L. McCarty Director of the Stanford Woods Institute for the Environment and Melvin and Joan Lane Professor for Interdisciplinary Environmental Studies. His research focuses on climate change\, especially solutions that improve lives now\, decrease the amount of future warming\, and support vibrant economies. He chaired the 2021 National Academies report\, Reflecting Sunlight: Recommendations for Solar Geoengineering Research and Research Governance. \nFrank Sesno is an Emmy Award-winning journalist with more than thirty years of experience reporting from around the world. He currently serves as Director of Strategic Initiatives at The George Washington University’s School of Media and Public Affairs\, where he created PlanetForward.org\, a multi-platform project that brings students and experts together to examine sustainable innovations that “move the planet forward.”

SUMMARY:Walk a Mile in Her Shoes
DESCRIPTION:STAR Alaska \n \n \n \n \n \n There is an old saying: “You can’t understand another person’s experience until you’ve walked a mile in their shoes.” To get people listening\, learning\, and talking\, Walk a Mile in Her Shoes education events organize around men literally walking one mile in women’s high-heeled shoes. \nIt’s not easy walking in these shoes\, but it’s an experience around which a lot of education\, self-reflection\, and change happens. It’s impressive to see such a visually stunning public statement of listening\, learning\, allyship\, and commitment. It’s an engaging event that gets the community talking about sex and gender biases\, gender identity\, gender relations\, and men’s sexualized violence. \nThis will be STAR’s 9th Annual Walk a Mile in Her Shoes Event. Each year we raise funds to provide services for people in our community\, as well as prevention and education in schools\, workplaces\, and community groups. \nThis year\, the Walk is going to be held outdoors at the Cuddy Family Midtown Park\, and the one-mile course will be three laps on the paved path around the pond at the park. Together\, alongside our participants and supporters\, can make the 2021 Walk the most successful one yet!
