SUMMARY:Operations: Silver Bullet
DESCRIPTION:Four Reasons why internal-infrastructure teams need software-defined solutions \n\nUser’s don’t trust the current system\nNew technological innovations remain unutilized\nIT services appear expensive compared to cloud options\nInconvenience is at an all-time high\n\nJoin Cisco\, Cohesity\, and Leverage IS to learn how software-defined solutions can reduce capital and operating costs by 50 percent\, provide 30 percent gains in performance and cut the length of outages by half. \nSCHEDULE: \n9 a.m. – Breakfast \n10 a.m. to 3 p.m. – Presentation and Q&A \n3 p.m. – Games\, Drinks\, and Appetizers \n  \nThe Cloud Expectation \nCloud solutions have created the impression of a superior operating model. Product owners\, engineers\, and business customers appreciate the high availability\, flexible capacity arrangements\, transparent cost structures\, and rapid incident response that large public-cloud providers offer. Moreover\, customers know they can count on cloud providers to provide the latest technology. \nThe Traditional IT Weakness \nExpectations of cloud performance and resiliency have put the relative weaknesses of internal-infrastructure operations on sharp display. Product teams and external customers aren’t able to see the true cost of what they’re paying. Capacity is fixed\, and the ordering cycle is so long that product teams often have to predict needs for one or more quarters in the future\, increasing the risk of errors. \nThe IT Silver Bullet \nInternal-infrastructure teams have several natural advantages. Not only do they have deeper knowledge of the company and its customers\, but they can also deliver superior TCO in a number of use cases. Many have paid down the cost of their assets\, in full or in part\, and they own proprietary customer data. They also have the ability to tailor software and hardware solutions to customer needs.

SUMMARY:2019 Solstice Tree Tour
DESCRIPTION:The community and media are invited to the fourth annual Solstice Tree Tour\, hosted by the Nordic Skiing Association of Anchorage\, at Kincaid Park. This is a celebration of Winter Solstice\, festive holiday trees\, and healthy outdoor fun for all ages (as well as skiers and non-skiers) and is an Anchorage winter tradition! The Solstice Tree Tour showcases Kincaid’s winter magic while bringing the community together to celebrate and showcase Anchorage’s trails. \nEvent entry is free and offers a rare opportunity for people to take a winter walk or snowshoe on the ski-only Mize Loop—though skiing is encouraged. More than thirty trees have already been sponsored and will be decorated by local businesses for this year’s event. Free hot drinks for kids\, holiday cheer for adults\, and traditional s’mores will be served as families and individuals travel the 2.5-kilometer Mize Loop. Warming barrels will be provided to help tree viewers stay comfortable. The loop concludes with a friendly competition among tree sponsors: event attendees voting on the top tree. \nSki demos will also be available for beginners. Carpooling or biking to the event is encouraged; six free shuttles will be traveling from 6420 Kulis Drive and Kincaid Elementary from 4-8 p.m. Bikers can store their wheels at a secure corral while they walk the loop. Dogs are not allowed. \nTrees are still available for sponsorships and decorating. Get more information about those opportunities from Sara Miller at solsticetreetour@gmail.com. For other event details\, please contact Sara Kamahele at the NSAA.
