Several national presenters will be on hand\, as well as sessions with educators from across Alaska. There will be a January 18 preconference for rural and small schools\, held virtually\, where attendees can explore tools and strategies to address academic and behavioral challenges within the context of small or rural school communities. Carol Ann Tomlinson will speak in a presentation called “Three lenses for Growing Your Understanding of Differentiation\,” in which she will explore three lenses that can extend\, enrich\, and enliven both how differentiation can be thought about and how it can be implemented: a differentiation state of mind\, 3D differentiation; and “teaching up.” A pre-conference session will be held at the Dena’ina Civic and Convention Center Friday\, January 24\, from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.\, during which attendees can sign up for one of four workshops to explore an issue in depth.

Founded in 1974\, the association is a statewide professional organization for people working\, studying\, and interested in all areas of Northern anthropology. The association has more than 200 active members in Alaska\, the United States\, Canada\, France\, Denmark\, Norway\, and Japan. For more than thirty years its members have helped to break new ground in basic and applied research\, to build collaborations between researchers and communities\, and to foster public knowledge and interest in circumpolar cultural heritage. This year’s annual meeting will feature keynote addresses by Dr. Rudy Reimer from the Department of Archaeology at Simon Fraser University in Burnaby\, British Columbia\, and Dr. Julia Christensen\, from the Department of Geography and Planning at Queens University in Kingston\, Ontario.

This year’s symposium will be set up in half-day courses and will offer options for a wide variety of skill levels. Throughout the symposium\, attendees will have options for courses on the water—and on land for those who would like a break or who might have an interest in course materials which can best be delivered off the water. In the evenings\, attendees can choose from a number of social events\, from meet-and-greets and catered dinners to a slide show and an event debrief with hors d’oeuvres. The symposium is designed to be educational and fun and also a place to meet other paddlers. A five-day American Canoe Association Sea Kayak Instructor Certification precedes the symposium. Following the symposium\, attendees can take part in a women’s sea kayak trip with Amber Champion of Champion Adventures and Coaching that includes five days of sea kayaking through the northernmost leg of the Inside Passage. Pre- and post-symposium events are booked separately.
