SUMMARY:Recycle Revival
DESCRIPTION:Fall is in the air! Cool\, colorful days beckon us for a walk on our many inviting trails; crisp\, tasty apples beg to be baked into delectable goodies; and the scent of wood smoke begins to waft (or drift) from chimneys. What better time to gather for a celebration of great music and recycling in the Mat-Su Valley than the RECYCLE REVIVAL MUSIC FESTIVAL! \nBring your whole family and all your friends for an opportunity to dance the day away. Enjoy many fabulous lunch and dinner choices at The Albatross Restaurant and at the same time\, help sustain your local recycling center while listening to some of the best music the Valley has to offer. \nVCRS recently launched the Sustain Campaign to raise money that will serve as a financial safety net\, covering operations when the markets experience a downturn (as they are right now)\, as well as when unexpected events occur\, such as equipment failures. With its building and new baler\, VCRS staff can handle five times the amount it now collects – so it can meet the demands of the Valley’s rapid growth for years to come\, making it a great investment in our community’s economic future as well as its environmental health and beauty! \nVisit our website at valleyrecycling.org for more information\, find us on Facebook\, and feel free to share this information far and wide. This is truly a Music Festival for the long-term good of all! \nAdmission to this day-long event is $15 – no charge for kids 12 and under.

SUMMARY:Anchorage Design Week
DESCRIPTION:As a museum\, we are interested in how creative and critical thinking can change the world\, from the inventions and events of the past to our collective futures. We celebrate the moments that change the way we make\, connect\, transport and express\, whether in art\, science\, culture\, or design.  \nDesign is a key component of how the Anchorage Museum looks at our Northern place and a key component of our work. Design is optimistic. Designers focus on what could be and are tasked with removing obstacles\, dealing with constraints and finding unexpected solutions. \nTo take on a big challenge\, especially one as large and intractable as poverty\, we have to believe in progress. Optimism embraces possibility\, the idea that even if we don’t know the answer\, it is out there\, and we can find it. \nHuman-centered designers focus on what could be rather than on the potential obstacles. Constraints are inevitable\, and often they push designers toward unexpected solutions. But it’s our core belief that every problem is solvable. \nThe fourth annual Anchorage Design Week happens October 4-12\, 2019\, at the Anchorage Museum. The nine-day event includes keynotes and talks\, workshops\, and weekend socials covering everything from architecture and fashion to furniture and food. Through the theme Futures Possible\, Design Week looks at design and ideas that imagine the future through large vision and optimistic problem solving. \nThis year Anchorage Design Week pairs with SEED Lab to create a design community across the North with acclaimed designers\, the leading local design thinkers\, and the next generation of design with programs for all ages. Anchorage Design Week collaborators include Alaska Design Forum and AIGA Alaska. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n There are workshops on a variety of topics throughout the week. \nPhotos by Jodyo.Photos \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n A few of the opening weekend events include: \nTent City Press Screen Printing6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Friday\, October 4\, Anchorage Museum \nStop by the Anchorage Museum for First Friday and Design Week kick-off\, featuring Tent City Press\, among other activities. SUMMARY:2019 Statewide Elders & Youth Conference
DESCRIPTION:First Alaskans Institute’s 36th Annual Elders & Youth Conference theme\, “Qaneryararput Yugtun Piniqerput/Qaneryararput Cugtun Kayuqerput\,” celebrates the beauty and importance of Alaska Native languages. This year’s conference will kick off with a Warming of the Hands pre-conference gathering on Sunday\, October 13\, with the main conference taking place October 14-16 at the Carlson Center in Fairbanks. Elders & Youth provides a special opportunity to make connections\, reinforce identity and belonging\, explore art and issues\, and contribute to the greater community through the transference of knowledge between our generations. \nThe Elders & Youth theme\, “Qaneryararput Yugtun Riniqerput/Qaneryararput Cugtun Kayuqerput\,” fluidly translates to “Language is Our Super Power” and honors how we are stronger with our languages. When spoken\, they connect us to our ancestors\, our lands\, waters and animals\, provide healing\, and instruct us in living our ways of life. Our languages reside within us and we are responsible for putting them to use for a stronger future; upholding this responsibility\, First Alaskans will choose a different Alaska Native language each year to highlight with our theme. This year\, we selected the Yugtun and Cugtun languages\, spoken by Yup’ik and Cup’ik peoples of the Yukon Kuskokwim Delta region. \nThe Warming of the Hands gathering will be held on Sunday\, October 13\, featuring men’s\, women’s\, and LGBTQA+/Two Spirit Houses and regional breakout sessions. Chin’an: A Night of Cultural Celebration will be held on Monday\, October 14 (also Indigenous Peoples’ Day) featuring the incredible talents of our community members who step up to share their gifts. \nQuyana cakneq to our 2019 Statewide Elders & Youth Council and other members of our community whose thoughtful contributions and ideas guide us each year to truly memorable conference experiences. We look forward to seeing you in Fairbanks this October!
