Mining

Mining supports nearly 12,000 jobs for Alaskans, including about 2,500 direct jobs in production, exploration and development, as well as a number of self-employed miners. Mining indirectly supports jobs in businesses that sell supplies to the mines and in construction companies working on mine development. Alaska Native corporations own land where several producing or planned mines are located - and royalties they receive from mining companies indirectly support some Native corporation jobs. There are five operating mines in Alaska: Fort Knox, Greens Creek, Red Dog, Usibelli and Pogo.
