Construction

Construction spending "on the street" in Alaska in 2009 was about $7.1 billion, down 3 percent from 2008. Lower construction spending, combined with higher material and labor costs, resulted in a modest reduction in the level of construction employment in 2009.
Although this was the fourth year of decline, the level remains considerably above the long-term average.
Excluding the oil and gas sector - which accounts for 43 percent of the total - construction spending was about $4.1 billion - down 1 percent from 2008.
