Notice of Opening Eastern Coastal Area
The Department of Natural Resources, Division of Mining, Land and Water (DMLW) has documented that soil temperatures and snow cover within the Eastern Coastal Area have met the criteria for opening (6 inches of snow and colder than -5 °C soil temperature at 30 cm depth).
The tundra is open to all vehicles in the Eastern Coastal Area for the 2015-2016 winter season effective at 2130 hours, Monday, January 4, 2016.
This opening applies only to those operators who have valid off-road vehicle travel permits to operate on state-owned lands on the North Slope.
Note that although overall snow cover is good, it may be thin in some areas. These areas should be avoided, or special construction methods should be used to protect the tundra surface. Special attention should be given to the DMLW’s stipulation regarding winter offroad vehicle travel, which requires adequate frost and snow cover. Site inspections will be conducted periodically by state personnel to ensure compliance.
