Northrim Bank Seeks to educate Alaskans on rising threats of ‘ransomware’ and other cyber threats
Insidious malware in email links and attachments
ANCHORAGE, AK- June 6, 2016- Ransomware – an insidious type of malware that encrypts, or locks, valuable digital files and demands a ransom to release them – is on the rise in Alaska, particularly with businesses. Alaska-based Northrim Bank is helping spread the message to all Alaskans to raise awareness in how these and other cyberattacks may occur, and how individuals and businesses can safeguard their information.
“As a community bank, we are working every day to safeguard our customers’ information,” says Ben Craig, Northrim’s Chief Information Officer. “We also recognize the added benefit of sharing best practices and preventative measures for our customers to use at home and for their businesses.”
Northrim has given several presentations on this topic in recent months, including hosting free lunch seminars at their offices, and presentations to local chambers and business groups. The Bank also posts regular alerts on the security section of their website, noting any recent cyber threats and links to useful information such as tips to avoid online fraud.
With the recent increase in ransomware attacks, the Bank recommends individuals and businesses validate they are running the latest anti-virus software and that it's being updated with the latest daily virus definitions. By following some of the security practices listed in Northrim’s website, businesses can greatly reduce the risk of data breach or financial loss.
“Putting security measures in place – such as simply educating your employees to look out for suspicious email links or attachments – can make a significant difference in preventing fraud and losses to your company,” says Craig.
