GCI salutes troops, enlists customer support to donate more than $11,000 to USO Alaska

Funds for local USO center help connect service members and their families

ANCHORAGE, ALASKA – GCI today announced its support of the United Service Organizations (USO) Alaska through more than $10,000 in donations to its new Joint-Base Elmendorf Richardson (JBER) locations. The funds will connect Alaska troops and their family members through some of the most advanced technology services available in the country.

“At GCI, our mission is to connect people,” said GCI Senior Vice President of Consumer Services Paul Landes. “Whether we are connecting students to educational programs across the state, rural patients with doctors at urban hospitals or our troops with family members who are thousands of miles away – it’s what we do. USO Alaska focuses on keeping our service members connected and we couldn’t be more proud to provide support and connectivity to an organization like USO that strives to uplift our country’s service members and their families.”

USO provides support to members of the U.S. Armed Forces and their families at more than 180 locations worldwide. Earlier this year, USO Alaska opened the doors to two new, state-of-the-art facilities on JBER – the USO Alaska Center and first-ever USO Wellness Center. The centers are open to all active duty service members, National Guard, Reserve and their dependents. GCI supported the opening of the USO Alaska Center with an in-kind sponsorship of more than $10,000 worth of services, which will includes data streaming needed for soldiers to video chat (FaceTime) with family members across the globe and engage in a favorite pastime, online gaming.

“Staying connected to family, home and country is crucial for our service members and military families, because it allows them to feel at home in an unfamiliar place and boosts morale,” said USO Alaska Center Director Tara Mogan. “We couldn’t be more thankful to GCI for helping us provide a home away from home for service members to relax and have fun at the new USO Alaska Center.”

In addition to the donation of services, GCI selected USO Alaska to be the focus of GCI’s charitable giving project during National Military Appreciation Month in May. GCI featured the organization in a series of ads in May that encouraged Alaskans to volunteer and donate. GCI also donated a percentage of sales to USO Alaska in May in the amount of $1,700.
