Alaska Communications Plans Broadband Expansion
Aims to bring affordable broadband to 31,000 homes
ANCHORAGE, Alaska – Alaska Communications (NASDAQ: ALSK), the state’s leading broadband and managed IT provider, is pleased to announce the largest affordable broadband deployment under any one program in Alaska.
The Federal Communications Commission recently issued an order proposing broadband deployment for Alaska, called the Connect America Fund Phase II (CAF II) Program. Through this program, over the next 10 years Alaska Communications will deploy broadband to about 31,500 homes in Alaska, of which about 25,000 do not have broadband access.
The company will receive about $19.4 million per year of high cost federal universal service support to provide a minimum of 10 Mbps download and 1 Mbps upload speeds to all locations.
Alaska Communications network planning and engineering teams are now creating a multi-year buildout plan to bring more Alaskans reliable, affordable, high-speed internet without data caps or overage charges using the CAF II program.
