AMHS Samsung Galaxy Note 7 Smartphone Policy

Power off affected devices onboard vessels, on docks and in facilities

Published:

The safety of Alaska Marine Highway System passengers and employees is our number one priority. The Samsung Galaxy Note 7 Smartphone has been reported to experience battery failures and poses a safety hazard. Samsung, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and the U.S. Coast Guard have issued advisories urging owners to power down these devices and stop charging or using them. Following these advisories, AMHS would like to caution passengers to follow the manufacturer's instructions and to request that they power off affected devices onboard vessels, on docks and in facilities.

The Coast Guard recommends taking the following actions in instances where a Galaxy Note 7 is discovered on a vessel:

  • Turn off the phone
  • Disconnect the phone from any charging equipment
  • Disable all applications that could inadvertently activate the phone such as the alarm clock
  • Protect the power switch to prevent it from being turned on
  • Keep the device accessible under constant supervision

Service notices may be found at dot.alaska.gov/amhs/service_notices.shtml or by contacting your local terminal by dialing 1-907-465-3941 or toll-free at 1-800-642-0066.

The Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities oversees 249 airports, 11 ferries serving 35 communities, 5,619 miles of highway and 720 public facilities throughout the state of Alaska. The mission of the department is to Keep Alaska Moving through service and infrastructure.
