SEARHC reminds Vets health-related travel is free on Inter-Island Ferry Authority

Published:

JUNEAU, January 23, 2015 - The SouthEast Alaska Regional Health Consortium (SEARHC) would like to be sure Veterans are aware that they may now travel between Ketchikan and Prince of Wales Island for health-related purposes on Alaska’s Inter-Island Ferry Authority (IFA) at no charge.

The State of Alaska Department of Military & Veterans Affairs has included the IFA in their new Veterans Federal Transportation Grant Program. This authorizes the IFA to issue both passenger and vehicle travel at no cost to Veterans when traveling in conjunction with healthcare needs.

Access to health care in Southeast Alaska comes with a unique set of challenges. SEARHC is extremely pleased that the financial burden that comes with traveling to receive medical care will be mitigated for Veterans that live in this part of our state.

To qualify for this no-cost program, travelers must present positive Veterans Affairs, U.S Armed Forces (Retiree), Alaska Driver license or State ID with VA endorsement when traveling. Examples of valid identification can be found on IFA’s website, www.interislandferry.com.

To book travel, please call (866) 308-4848 or (907) 225-4848. For additional information, contact General IFA Manager, Dennis Watson at (907) 617-2800.
