National Blood Donor Month Aims to Increase Commitment to Help Alaska Patients

January is National Blood Donor Month

January is designated as National Blood Donor Month in an effort to raise awareness about the need for blood and to recognize those who routinely give blood for patients in need.  Blood Bank of Alaska encourages Alaskans to ring in the New Year and save a life starting January 2nd. Making the commitment to donate blood on a regular basis will keep patients safe.  All donors that donate January 2nd to January 9th will earn 400 points to shop the hero store.  You can access the store online at www.bloodbankofalaska.org by registering with the Donor Connection Tool.  Hero store items include hats, shirts and more.

The blood collected is used to treat cancer patients, those recovering from surgery, trauma victims and various other medical conditions.  In order to donate blood you must be at least 16 years of age (16 & 17 year olds must have signed parental consent), be in good general health and weigh 113 pounds.  Donors take a short health exam that includes blood pressure reading, temperature, and hematocrit reading.  A short questionnaire is part of the screening process to determine health history and travel history.

There is no substitute for blood when it is needed.  Hospital patients only receive blood from volunteer blood donors and they count on the generosity of these strangers to recover.  Blood Bank of Alaska has four permanent locations currently open for donations:
