Critical Need for Blood Donors Due to Local Area Traumas This Summer
ANCHORAGE – During the summer months it is challenging to maintain a stable blood supply for the local area hospitals that we serve. At this time there is a national shortage of blood and many hospitals in the Lower 48 have run out of blood. Blood Bank of Alaska has been meeting the demand of the Alaska hospitals, however due to an increase in local area traumas we are currently critical for all blood types. Blood donors with the blood type O negative are especially in need because they are the universal donor. Hospitals often use this blood type first when a patient’s blood type has not been determined.
Blood Bank of Alaska encourages donors to make an appointment to donate blood at one of our centers to replenish the supply.

There are many reasons that patients need blood during treatment such as traumas, surgery, cancer treatments and much more. Blood Bank of Alaska is the only blood bank in the state and has been committed to helping patients for more than 50 years. One in three Alaskans will need blood in their lifetime. There is no substitute for blood when there is a need. Your donations make a difference for patients every day.
To ensure a quick donation process please make an appointment at one of our four centers or any of our mobile drives. Please eat a good meal, drink plenty of fluids and bring a photo I.D. when you come to donate.
