Celebrate Our State Flag with AK Child & Family
You’re invited! AK Child & Family welcomes the community to honor the Alaska Flag with us, during our annual Flag Day celebration on Saturday, July 9 from 5:30pm8:30pm. The AK Child & Family campus will be transformed into a festival filled with food, face painting, live music, and lots of family games. You can also meet U.S Olympic Nordic Ski Team member Sadie Bjornsen, as she serves as one of our special guest ice cream scoopers.
Flag Day is celebrated each year to mark the date when the very first Alaska Flag flew over the Jesse Lee Home, AK Child & Family’s predecessor, in Seward in 1927. Each year on July 9 Alaska Child & Family also honors Benny Benson. Benson entered a contest to design the Alaska Flag in 1925 when he was just 13 years old. At the time, Benson lived at the Jesse Lee Home in Seward. His winning drawing of eight stars of gold on a field of blue remains the symbol today and is the only flag in the country designed by a child. In 1997, the legislature officially designated each July 9 as Alaska Flag Day.
Flag Day tickets are available for purchase online at akchild.org, or at the door on the day of the event. Proceeds from this event benefit the Mike MacDonald Partnership and Treatment Fund. This unique program ensures that children in need of our services will not be turned away due to an inability to pay.
