Public Invited to Testify About Proposed Cuts to the University of Alaska
University of Alaska Finance Subcommittee Scheduled to Meet Saturday
Juneau – Representative David Guttenberg (D-Fairbanks) will be holding a University of Alaska Finance Subcommittee meeting on Saturday, April 29th from 1:00-4:30 p.m. to hear public testimony.
The meeting will provide the opportunity Alaskans around the state have asked for to express their thoughts and concerns regarding the proposed cuts to the University of Alaska budget for Fiscal Year 2018.
Over the last three years, significant cuts to the University of Alaska have resulted in the loss of hundreds of employees, elimination or suspension of 50 academic programs, and reduced the morale of University faculty and stakeholders. The UA Board of Regents has expressed deep concern that the proposed cuts will have a crippling effect on the University of Alaska.
“Alaskans understand the valuable role the University of Alaska plays throughout our economy and our state,” said Rep. Guttenberg. “They are concerned about the impacts of these proposed cuts, and those concerns prompted the decision to open the legislative record and give the public an opportunity to have their voices heard.”
Members of the public can participate in Saturday’s meeting by appearing at their local Legislative Information Office. Those that can’t make it to an LIO can call 907-465-4648 to get the number to phone in public testimony on Saturday.
