Governor Walker’s Statement on Missile Defense System Test

Published:

July 11, 2017 JUNEAU — Governor Bill Walker released the following statement today after the successful test of a key missile defense system in Alaska:

“I join my fellow Alaskans and all Americans in congratulating the U.S. Missile Defense Agency and the staff of the Alaska Aerospace Corporation at Pacific Space Complex-Alaska for yesterday’s successful launch.  For this mission, a Terminal High Altitude Area Defense System (THAADS) missile successfully intercepted and shot down a simulated ballistic missile over the Pacific Ocean.  The test was the first-ever attempted intercept of an intermediate-range missile that is faster and more difficult to intercept than a short range missiles.  The United States has deployed this system to South Korea to protect our troops and allies there from North Korean aggression.  Alaska is proud to be in the forefront as the Pentagon assures this system will succeed when needed most.” –Governor Bill Walker
