Giessel Welcomes Order Boosting Oil Drilling in NPRA, Reviewing 1002

Published:

JUNEAU – Today, in an effort to boost oil and gas development in Alaska, U.S. Secretary of the Interior Ryan Zinke signed an order paving the way for development in the National Petroleum Reserve in Alaska (NPRA) and reviewing the 1002 area of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) for future drilling.

“The President has declared the war on energy in North America over,” said Secretary Zinke. “My commitment as secretary is to restore trust, to be an advocate, not an adversary.”

Secretary Ryan Zinke reiterated President Trump's goal for energy dominance, and Alaska is foundational to that goal.

The McDowell group’s 2017 report found that over 30 percent of the jobs in Alaska are connected to the oil and gas industry, as well as $6 billion in wages.

“Alaska's economy, Alaska's jobs for families and businesses, rely on a healthy resource industry,” said Sen. Cathy Giessel, R-Anchorage, chair of the Senate Resources Committee. “We've experienced nearly a decade of hostility to Alaska and other states that fuel our country's energy from D.C. bureaucrats. The top federal official for Alaska, a Navy Seal veteran and product of a western state, is welcome leadership.”

Secretary Zinke said Alaska's economy is measured by the health of Alaska's pipeline, and wants more oil through it.

“Rules should be based on science and best practices, not on arbitrariness,” Secretary Zinke added.

Within 21 days if this order, the Department of Interior shall schedule to revise the integrated plan for the NPRA. The plans shall be designed to maximize energy use and review 1002 of ANWR.
