Anchorage Military & Veterans Affairs Commission
Today, the Municipality of Anchorage (MOA) hosts a one-hour Memorial Day Ceremony to honor and commemorate the men and women who have sacrificed their lives in devotion to liberty, freedom and democracy. The event is scheduled from 9:30-10:30 a.m. at the Delaney Park Strip memorial on West 9th Avenue and I Street.
This year’s free, public event starts a half hour earlier than in years past. The Anchorage Remembers ceremony includes patriotic music, spiritual words and laying of wreaths to honor the fallen. Speakers include Anchorage Mayor Ethan Berkowitz and Air Force Lt. Gen. Ken Wilsbach, commander of the Alaskan Command and 11th Air Force, and top-ranking military officer in Alaska.
During the ceremony, the MOA Military & Veterans Affairs Commission will pay special tribute to a veteran-and-wife team that volunteers for Fisher House Alaska on Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson. Fisher House Foundation builds comfort homes where families of military members and veterans can stay free of charge while a loved one is in the hospital.
The event is free and open to the public. For more information, contact Commission Chair Pam Beale at 907-720-3923, or visit the commission's Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/MOAMilVetCommission/.
