Alaska Senators introduce OPENS Alaska Act
U.S. Sens. Lisa Murkowski and Dan Sullivan, both R-Alaska, yesterday introduced the Offshore Production and Energizing National Security Alaska Act of 2017 (OPENS Alaska Act) to repeal Outer Continental Shelf (OCS) withdrawals made at the end of the Obama administration, provide for lease sales in the Arctic OCS, and ensure Alaska receives a fair share of the revenues from oil and gas development off its coast.

"After years of regulatory restrictions and burdens imposed by the Obama administration, this bill charts a much better course for responsible energy production in our Beaufort and Chukchi seas that actually reflects the views of the vast majority of Alaskans," Murkowski said. "These areas contain prolific resources that can be safely developed to create jobs, reduce our deficits, keep energy affordable, and strengthen national security. I look forward to working with Alaskans and my colleagues to advance this bill through the Senate."

A federal priority, the Alaska Chamber strongly supports oil and gas exploration and production in Alaska's federal areas, and was pleased to see Senator Murkowski and Senator Sullivan advocate for the development of these valuable resources.

Alaska Chamber priority reaches major milestone
Alaska has some of the most expensive workers' compensation rates in the country. Working to change this has been a long-standing state priority of the Alaska Chamber.

With the help of Senator Cathy Giessel and the Workers' Compensation Committee of Alaska, the Chamber has reached a major milestone in addressing Alaska's broken workers' compensation system.

The introduction of Senate Bill 112 is the first step in addressing the problem. The 50-page bill offers comprehensive reform to reduce the cost of insurance for employers while emphasizing effective treatment programs that promote injury recovery and the return to full employment of injured workers.

Advancing specific legislation that makes Alaska a better place for business and for workers is exactly where the Chamber belongs. We will continue advocating for reform throughout the legislative interim this summer.

Chamber members should expect opportunities to participate in the discussion, and certainly encourage your legislators to educate themselves in anticipation of passing reforms next year.
