WRANGELL, Alaska (Monday, January 30th) — Alaska Fisheries Development Foundation (AFDF) held the Seattle Open House on January 25th as a part of the Alaska Symphony of Seafood. At this event, guests were asked to try all the new products entered and vote on their favorite. The votes were tallied and the winner is crowned the Seattle People’s Choice. The winner this year was Oregon Seafoods with its SeaFare Pacific Salmon Chowder.

“Everybody at Oregon Seafoods is excited and appreciates winning the Seattle People’s Choice at the Alaska Symphony of Seafood. We have chosen to use only the best ingredients for our Smoked Salmon Chowder which includes Wild Caught Alaskan Sockeye Salmon,” stated Mike Babcock, Founder of Oregon Seafoods. “We have a commitment to add value to US caught seafood and provide a way for consumers to add heart healthy fish to their diet.”

“It was a close contest this year. The competition was strong from Coppa with the company’s Candied Salmon Ice Cream coming in second by only one vote”, commented Julie Decker, Executive Director of AFDF.

Also on January 25th, AFDF held the professional judging for the Alaska Symphony of Seafood. Each product was grouped into one of four categories: Retail, Foodservice, Beyond the Plate, and Beyond the Egg. The results of the judging will be kept confidential until February 22nd, when they will be announced at the Legislative Reception and Award Ceremony in Juneau. At that time, the Juneau People’s Choice will also be announced. First place winners from each category receive complimentary booth space at Seafood Expo North America, the industry’s biggest event of the year, held in Boston in March, as well as free airfare to and from the show provided by Alaska Airlines.
