Angela Libal, the long-time manager of Title Wave Books in Spenard, now has a new role at the nearly 27-year-old bookstore—owner. The lifelong Alaskan saw an opportunity when Title Wave’s founders, Steve Lloyd and Julie Drake, decided to retire after almost three decades in retail.
A lifelong Alaskan, Libal joined Title Wave as a bookseller nearly 20 years ago and has managed the store since 2008. “I am excited and fortunate to have the opportunity to continue Title Wave’s service to the community. An entire generation of readers has known this bookstore as a reading wonderland, and now we’re seeing customers who shopped here with their parents come in with kids of their own.”
Libal plans to downsize the store somewhat while remaining open for business. Although Title Wave paused its used book buy-back operation while moving sections to fit the new footprint, the store will once again begin accepting inventory for cash and in-store trade credit as early as April 1, a full month ahead of schedule.
Since 1996, Title Wave has made its home in Spenard, a neighborhood known for its eclectic blend of mostly locally-owned, independent and hip retail stores and restaurants.
Title Wave co-founder Julie Drake said “We are thrilled to have Angela take over the store. Steve and I are confident it will continue to be an extremely successful bookstore and to play an important role in the community.”
Drake’s husband and co-founder Steve Lloyd is looking forward to retirement. “I have 27 years of reading to catch up on,” he explained.
Title Wave Books was founded in 1991 by Alaskans Steve Lloyd and Julie Drake, and has grown to become the largest bookstore in Alaska. Now occupying 25,000 square feet, Title Wave’s Spenard location features more than a half-million used and bargain books, CDs, DVDs, and Vinyl LPs. Title Wave Books employs twenty full-time booksellers. In addition to earning many awards and accolades, owners Lloyd and Drake were honored as SBA Small Business Persons of the Year for Alaska in 2003.
