Will Rhodes recently joined R&M CONSULTANTS, INC. (R&M) as a Senior Geologist in the firm’s Fairbanks office, expanding the firm’s service offerings locally in Fairbanks to include engineering geology and environmental services.
Since opening our Fairbanks office in 2009, the staff has been composed mainly of surveyors and right of way staff. As part of our strategic business plan, R&M has planned to add other staff in this office to provide services within our core business lines. Will offers a local Fairbanks complement to our Anchorage Earth Sciences Department. He will be responsible for supporting ongoing engineering geology and environmental work for a variety of civil and environmental projects, including subsurface investigations, site characterization, material site assessments, geologic mapping, engineering geology, aerial photo interpretation, geotechnical/environmental site investigations, technical report writing and data analysis.
“R&M was founded in Fairbanks in 1969 by a geologist and geotechnical engineer,” said Charlie Riddle, R&M’s Senior Vice President of Earth Sciences. “We look forward to many more years of earth sciences projects based in Fairbanks and are thankful Will has re-joined R&M to lead those efforts.”
Will has eight years of experience in geology and environmental engineering. He is a former R&M employee, working for the firm from 2008 to 2010 in our Anchorage office. He left R&M to return home to Fairbanks where he had lived for eight years prior to moving to Anchorage, and to develop his experience with a firm specializing in contaminated sites management and remediation.
“I pursued rejoining R&M as I enjoyed the diversity in projects I worked on in the Earth Sciences Department supporting geological, geotechnical and environmental project components,” said Will. “I appreciate R&M’s high level of professionalism and commitment to their employees. It’s also very important to me to be a part of an organization that is Alaskan owned and operated.”
Will is experienced in contaminated site management, including site characterization and monitoring activities; remediation system installation and implementation; and environmental sampling. He has particular expertise with vapor intrusion assessments, chlorinated solvent release characterization and remediation. In addition, he has performed environmental regulatory work, including permitting, state and federal agency coordination, and environmental document preparation.
Will is also experienced in engineering geology performing geotechnical investigations, roadway material site evaluation and slope stability assessment. He is knowledgeable of contaminant fate, and transport and remediation strategies used in arctic and sub-arctic climates and how soil properties and surficial geology affect planning and construction of infrastructure in Alaska.
“I appreciate the mix of field and office work,” said Will. “I enjoy travelling to the far reaches of the state on field assignments to collect data. After I have had all the rain, snow and wind I can take, I appreciate performing data analysis and preparing reports back in the office.”
Since rejoining R&M, Will has been involved in proposal development and marketing, with the goal of establishing R&M’s Earth Sciences presence in Fairbanks. He is also supporting the Class V Injection Well Removal and Closure effort for the Alaska Department of Transportation & Public Facilities (DOT&PF) Maintenance & Operations Stations and R&M’s environmental term contract with the Fairbanks International Airport.
Will has a B.S. in Geology and a M.S. in Environmental Engineering from the University of Alaska Fairbanks. He has spent most of his adult life in Alaska and enjoys spending time in Alaska’s wilderness throughout the year. He resides near Fairbanks in one of Alaska’s most prominent mushing communities (Two Rivers) and his life outside the office revolves around breeding, training and racing sled dogs with his wife and daughter at their kennel, Mackey’s Alaskan Distance Dogs. Will also enjoys backpacking, fishing and hunting.
Founded in Alaska in 1969, R&M offers civil, structural, geotechnical and waterfront engineering; surveying and mapping; GIS services; geology; hydrology; environmental services; transportation and land use planning; public involvement; right of way and lands consulting services; construction administration; materials testing; and special inspection. R&M has offices in Anchorage and Fairbanks.
