Ski 4 Kids event Saturday at Kincaid Park
The annual free event is a special day for kids to learn and play outdoors and for community partners to support local schools and ski programs
ANCHORAGE – Fueled by a shared passion for active kids, Anchorage Parks and Recreation, Healthy Futures and the Nordic Skiing Association of Anchorage host Ski 4 Kids starting at 12:30 p.m. Saturday, March 4, at Kincaid Park. The free and festive annual event is open to all children and packed with winter recreational experiences.
Ski 4 Kids activities take place inside and outside the Kincaid Park chalet. They include obstacle courses, a mock-biathlon and a race series for all ages. There are also speed-skating and ski jumping demos, Flat Kikkan photo opportunities, snowshoeing, orienteering treasure hunt and a sit-ski demo. Young skiers can test their glide on the 3-kilometer Mize Moose Loop course with timed waves for racers and untimed waves for the “just for fun” crowd. Parents are welcome to ski along with their kids. Another popular Ski 4 Kids feature is the Story Book Trail, a short loop illustrated with a story written by local students.
Ski Bear fun pass activities start at 12:30 p.m. and include the 3-kilometer Mize Moose Loop Race (timed and untimed) and the 1-kilometer Blue Bear Story Book Trail group starts scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Prizes can be picked up between 3-4 p.m. at the Kincaid Chalet. Bib pickup and last minute registration is noon-7 p.m. Thursday at REI’s Community Room. Event day registration for untimed waves only is noon-1:15 p.m. at the Kincaid Chalet. Families can register at www.anchoragenordicski.com/events/ski - 4 - kids/.
There is no set participant fee for Ski 4 Kids but donations are encouraged. Each participant receives a Ski Bear Lift Ticket, finish medal, goody bag, cookie and a special prize. Net proceeds from the event directly benefit local schools and youth organizations by providing new ski equipment for ski programs and to keep Anchorage kids active. This year, the reach is broad. Ski 4 Kids is busing kids from eight schools to Kincaid Park, giving many an outdoor experience that they wouldn’t have without transportation.
Ski 4 Kids also serves as a fundraising and awareness opportunities for community partners to support and develop an appreciation of winter outdoor sports and fitness for Anchorage area youth. Event organizers thank top Ski 4 Kids sponsors: ConocoPhillips, Twisted Branch Photography, Anchorage Pediatric Group, Banker Law Group, Continental Auto Group, the Elsberg Family Foundation, Alice and Gunnar Knapp, the Kornmesser and Waldrop Family, LaTouche Pediatrics, CRW Engineering Group and Great Harvest Bread Company.
